What are Puranas
Puranas are the Hindu religious text, meaning ‘of ancient time’, which are a part of the Vedas. They contain the details about the universe from its creation to when it ceases to exist. It also has genealogies of Kings, Sages, Heroes and Demigods. Puranas are usually written in the form of dialogues.

The creator of Puranas
Vyasa, the author and narrator of Mahabharata, is considered to be the compiler of the Puranas. However, it is not possible to trace the line of influence of one Purana over the other and therefore it in its entirety is considered as the synchronous whole.

Of the many texts, Mahapuranas are the most important. They are always said to be eighteen in numbers. The Mahapuranas are usually divided into three main aspects as derived from the ‘Trimurti’ – Brahma Puranas, Vishnu Puranas and Shiva Puranas.

The Upapuranas
The Upapuranas are the lesser texts. These are also said to be sometimes eighteen in numbers and few of them also said to be critically edited. These include; Sanat-kumara, Narasimha, Brihan-naradiya, Siva-rahasya, Durvasa, Kapila, Vamana, Bhargava, Varuna, Kalika, Samba, Nandi, Surya, Parasara, Vasishtha, Devi-Bhagavata, Ganesha, Mudgala, and Hamsa.

Sthala Puranas
Sthala Puranas gives an exhaustive account of all the temples and the shrines; especially focusing on the origin and traditions. There are many Sthala Puranas and they are all written in the form of vernaculars. The ones with the Sanskrit version also appear in the Mahapuranas and the Upapurans.
